Description:
Awards were made to child care resource and referral agencies (formerly Unified Child Care Agencies) in New Jersey's 21 counties to have registered nurses assess health care services in each county for children currently receiving child care.
All centers and registered family child care homes that serve infants and toddlers are eligible for health consultation services, which include observations, technical assistance, policy reviews, and training. During the past two years, health consultants have been trained in "train-the-trainer" programs on asthma (Healthy Children, Healthy Lungs), shaken baby syndrome, and administration of medication. Local trainings have been provided on using an apnea monitor, lead screening, CPR and First Aid, and universal health precautions. The consultants also develop linkages for bringing the health care community together to provide services to child care providers
All health consultants throughout the state have received training either from the National Training Center for Child Care Health Consultation at University of North Carolina--Chapel Hill or have received training from a consultant trained in North Carolina. To date, there are over 200 child care health consultants working with children in child care settings throughout the state.
